OpenSearch 3.7 available and Elasticsearch 7.10 retired

· 2 min read

The aws-elasticsearch service now supports OpenSearch 3.7, and Elasticsearch_7.10 has been retired.

New versions

These are the supported major versions for the elasticsearchVersion parameter:

  • OpenSearch_1.3
  • OpenSearch_2.17
  • OpenSearch_3.7

OpenSearch_3.7 is now the default when you don't specify a version.

Elasticsearch 7.10 is retired

Elasticsearch_7.10 can no longer be requested when creating an instance. If you have an existing instance still running Elasticsearch_7.10, upgrade it to a supported OpenSearch version:

cf update-service ${SERVICE_NAME} \
-c '{"elasticsearchVersion": "OpenSearch_1.3"}'

AWS may require you to move through intermediate versions rather than jumping straight to OpenSearch_3.7, so check the AWS OpenSearch upgrade documentation for supported upgrade paths and run each step as a separate cf update-service.

Before upgrading to OpenSearch 3.7

OpenSearch 3.x will not open an index that was created by Elasticsearch, even if the domain has already been upgraded through OpenSearch 1.x and 2.x — the indexes carried along by those upgrades are still Elasticsearch-created indexes.

While still on OpenSearch_2.17, reindex any Elasticsearch-era indexes into new indexes (or restore a snapshot into new indexes), switch your application and any aliases over to the new indexes, then delete the old ones. Otherwise the pre-upgrade check AWS runs will fail and your domain will stay on its current version.

See the aws-elasticsearch service documentation for more information.
